Reader’s Workshop

      Reading – Characters Studies

The current reading unit is “Characters Studies”. In this unit, students will extend their knowledge on how to study characters. They will continue to learn to look at how characters respond to problems and to begin to acknowledge different points of view. Students will learn to track their characters by seeing how their actions contribute to a sequence of events. Reading responses help support this thinking work by having readers come up with ideas about the characters using traits, feelings and motivations. Students will work in book clubs and hold each other accountable when they meet twice a week to discuss their books. We have been practicing coming up with theories about characters and proving it using text evidence. As a culminating project, students will learn to write a literary essay using two books from different series to prove their theories. The goal is to compare and contrast characters across the same series.
